The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has unveiled a major initiative to provide relief for individuals displaced by the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.

As part of the plan, the government will construct 1,000 housing units to accommodate those affected by the disaster.

During a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30, Mr Nkrumah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to easing the suffering of the displaced, highlighting that ensuring proper housing is a key step in helping them recover from the aftermath.

The Minister emphasized that the project is a top priority for the government, aiming to deliver timely support to those in need.

In addition to the initial 1,000 units, he announced that a second phase, which includes 1,010 more units, has been approved.

This reflects the government’s long-term commitment to addressing the housing needs of the affected communities.

The project has already secured the commencement certificate for the second phase, allowing it to progress.

Meanwhile, the government is completing essential procedures with the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and resolving land acquisition issues to begin construction.

Oppong Nkrumah further noted that 115 housing units are already under construction, with more than 60 percent completed.

“These are the units I broke ground for in April 2024. Phase 2, with 1,010 additional units, has also been approved, and we have received the commencement certificate.”
